§ 17-1001. Speed limits.

  • The general manager of the transportation department is hereby authorized to alter the prima facie speed limits as authorized by state law within the city, when, based upon an engineering and traffic investigation, it is determined that the maximum speed permitted under state law is greater or less than is reasonable or safe under the conditions found to exist upon any part of a street or highway located within the city. Three (3) current copies of the roadways and speed limits so affected by the general manager's decision shall be kept on file at the city clerk's office. Maximum speed limits of all other streets within the city, not affected by the general manager's decision shall be as established by state law.

    Editor's note— Section 1 of Ord. No. 2328, adopted Feb. 4, 1991, repealed former § 17-1001, and § 2 of the ordinance enacted a new § 17-1001 in lieu thereof to read as set out herein. The repealed provisions pertained to the schedule of maximum speed limits on streets within the city and derived from Code 1972, §§ 11-801—11-801.61, and the following ordinances:
